Promoting Literacy & Critical Thinking

Theatre Class Programs

Through theatre, students are immersed in learning

Through theatre, students can immerse themselves in stories old, new, and not yet created. Grounded in literacy, theatre in the classroom inherently supports core subjects, lends itself toward analysis of character traits, setting, and plot, and makes space for student collaboration. By embodying literary figures and improvising/devising theatrical experiences, students gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of course material–for learning that lasts long beyond testing.

Fractured Fairy Tales

Students co-create a fresh perspective on classic stories, giving them a modern-day twist, a focus on an unexpected character, or an alternate ending. Literacy becomes joyful and engaging.

Journey Through Time

Students jump back in time and re-create the past onstage. Stepping into the shoes of a president, explorer, or inventor, they make an important moment into a dramatic event they can relate to as if it were happening now. Bringing history to life helps students better understand people, motives, and ideas that shape today.

3-D Literacy

A proven, interactive, literacy -through-theatre program designed to help students improve reading skills. Theatre concepts help bring literacy to life while encouraging collaboration and building self-esteem and language skills. Building a solid foundation of literacy at a young age is vital to developing vocabulary and communication skills. Students take a deep dive into the workings of words as they physically explore the English language. Words leap off the page and come to life. Appropriate for gen ed, ELL, and special education students in grades 2-3.

Short Shakespeare

Students discover what the Bard is really saying as they create characters, discuss plot points, and dig into digestible Shakespeare.

Write On! Playwriting Program

Students use their imaginations and become playwrights, performing their creations at the end of the residency or directing other students who act out their plays.

Puppetry

Blending visual arts and theater, students create their own puppets and perform original scripts that can be tailored to integrate curricula and bring it to life.

New: Circus Arts!!

Spinning, balancing, and juggling are just some of the acts that students joyfully experience in this residency – all with a dose of laughter!

“Jeannine (teaching artist) really took this workshop to a higher level than I was expecting, organizing a recording session, and following up on ways to continue to work together. She keeps thinking bigger, and bigger, and bigger! And makes it happen!”
